GIVING BACK TO SOCIETY AND PROMOTING DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

We dedicate our efforts to themes connected to some of the main challenges facing society

A lthough a young firm, founded 26 years ago, Mattos Filho stands out for its initiatives for equality, diversity and inclusion in the legal world and has also been an example to other segments. This is due, in part, to proactive scanning for the challenges faced by the society we live in so that we can develop attitudes capable of overcoming them. “Here, social responsibility is part of our values and of our DNA. Since the beginning, we have always taken this subject very seriously and genuinely. We practice everything we preach”, explains Ive Lima, the Director of Communication and Marketing.

In this context, 2018 was a special year in the firm’s history. It was a very productive period, during which we consolidated a series of CSR initiatives as part of a structured program of encompassing scope. Today, we have clear guidelines for work on several fronts that impact different publics, including society at large, clients and our professionals.

During this journey, two new affinity groups were created to discuss issues relating to diversity and inclusion: SOMA, aimed at promoting racial-ethnic diversity and equality in the firm and the legal profession, in general; and eMFrente, dedicated to debating the issues faced by people with disabilities.

These two initiatives complement the groups created in previous years, like 4Women, which aims to make the working environment ever more equal when it comes to gender, as does mfriendly, which is also dedicated to discussing the LGBT+ theme as a whole. For Ive, “2018 was the moment to consolidate the diversity and inclusion programs and bring them even closer to the CSR themes of the human resources strategy”.

The plan for the future is to continue with the inclusive efforts. “The firm is open to receiving individuals from a diverse range of groups and thinking to develop and retain them, We need this diversity to grow as a firm”, Ive concludes.

A digital book launched in 2018, which collects articles written by our professionals and that demonstrate how a respect for people should not be mere corporate lip service or best practice, it is a legal obligation that must be complied with.

The book is the result of discussions promoted during the first edition of the Mattos Filho Diversity Week, which also took place in 2018 and included speakers renowned for their promotion and defense of human rights.

In addition to diversity and inclusion, Mattos Filho supported, in 2018, other social impact actions on three fronts: partnerships, corporate volunteering and diversity and inclusion, always prioritizing ways to affect communities neighboring the firm’s offices. Among the themes tackled, are the defense of human rights; access to justice; the democratization of culture; and educating about and exercising citizenship.

One of the highlights is Paulista for Everyone, which comprises a street furniture competition for São Paulo’s most iconic thoroughfare – Avenida Paulista, where the firm has an office – through the creation of a map with the cultural institutions located along the avenue, as well as guided tours explaining the history and architecture of the region. Another initiative to which we have dedicated ourselves was the launch of the “2018 Elections: Prepare yourself for a conscientious vote” leaflet, which was distributed to partnering organizations in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasília, and which also counted with a digital campaign on the Mattos Filho social channels. In this way, we contributed to promoting conscientious voting and the exercising of citizenship.

The firm’s corporate volunteering program was also completely revamped in 2018 and done in a collaborative manner. To achieve this, an internal survey was conducted, asking our professionals about their interests and availability for volunteer work, in addition to indicate possible partner organizations.

Finally, among the firm’s partnerships, of special note within the realm of the democratization of culture, the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra and the São Paulo State Pinacoteca, both renowned and well-respected institutions.
